Gianbattista Tiepolo was a painter born in Venice in 1696. In his paintings, the light comes from delicate shades of pink and light blue that spread across the sky and suffuse the bodies he portrays.

This post is a reflection on the meanings of light and lightness, inspired by the art of Tiepolo.

Quando c’è luce, la realtà è luminosa, colorata, chiara

Con la luce vediamo, scopriamo e conosciamo la realtà intorno a noi.

La parola ‘luce’ deriva dal latino ‘lux’ e del greco λευκός (leukòs) che significa ‘bianco’. La radice proto-indoeuropea ‘leuk’ ha il significato di ‘brillare’ e di ‘vedere’.

Quindi, in origine, la luce indica il colore bianco e al tempo stesso l’essere visibile e l’azione di vedere.

La luce esiste insieme al suo contrario: l’oscurità

Ci accorgiamo dell’esistenza della luce quando va via e al suo posto arriva l’oscurità.
